Founded in 1940 by Gladys Bownes, Barnwell’s staff strives to continue Gladys’ vision of excellent nursing care coupled with the notion that a stay in a nursing home, for either long term care or short term rehabilitation, should be an experience filled with caring and respect for the dignity of the individual.

Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nurse’s Aides are scheduled 24 hours a day, providing superior skilled nursing care around the clock for all of our patients.

Rehabilitation
At Barnwell Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, we make a difference in people’s lives. Our Rehabilitation Department is dedicated to helping residents achieve a maximum level of function through excellent, expert hands-on care. We provide progressive short term rehabilitation and compassionate long term care. Barnwells unique approach to rehabilitative care that enhances resident quality of life by implementing individualized care plans that address the total physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the individual. Our skilled and dedicated rehabilitation team uses state-of-the-art equipment in a warm, loving and motivational environment. Newly renovated gyms are equipped with all of the necessary tools for a thorough and comprehensive rehabilitation, including a fully simulated home setting to reintegrate you back to your home.
Physical Therapy addresses physical dysfunction and/or pain, such as the ability to walk again after illness through the use of therapeutic exercise, modalities, balance and gait training activities. Occupational Therapy is geared toward improving functional and self-care skills called Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including feeding, dressing and grooming through the use of techniques to improve fine motor control, coordination, perception and cognitive skills. Our speech/language pathologists work on the communication and swallowing needs of our residents by providing speech, language, oral and pharyngeal sensorimotor training. Restorative Nursing aims to maximize the resident's level of function and minimize decline by encouraging positive decision-making, participation in daily self-care activities and promoting safe physical activity. Our restorative care nursing assistants reinforce the training residents receive from physical, speech and respiratory therapy..
The Rehabilitation Department at Barnwell provides cutting-edge Physical, Occupational and Speech/Language Therapy, and Restorative Nursing programs to residents upon medical approval by their physicians. Programs offered include intensive short-term rehabilitation programs available 6 days per week, long-term restorative and maintenance services, nursing group exercises and self-reliant feeding training and ambulation programs.

The primary goal of this program is to educate both the resident and family through the recovery and rehabilitation process while you are at Barnwell.
